Nederland Vision 2010

In June 1999, we convened a community meeting to capture the vision for the Greater Nederland Area. Over a span of several months, over 200 community members met and crafted eight vision statements. A follow-up survey was sent to residents of the area to determine the priority of the statements.

GREATER NEDERLAND AREA VISION 2010 -Vision Statements-

In 2010, there are key parcels of undeveloped land preserved in and around Nederland for use as wildlife corridors, trail systems and a greenbelt buffer zone around the Town.

In 2010, transportation is free flowing, pedestrian friendly, accessible, well thought out with an emphasis on a variety of transportation alternatives and safe traffic design. There is adequate infrastructure for the increased volume of pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles (private, public and commercial).

In 2010, there is an environmentally conscious recreation program to oversee allo areas used for recreation and to build, maintain and expand facilities. There are recreational opportunities including non- motorized boating, non-motorized trails, indoor pool, skating rink, horse riding arena and a recreation center.

In 2010, there are organizations cooperatively planning, facilitating and educating for the purposes of preserving, protecting and restoring our regional environment.

In 2010, there is a plan to preserve the community's rural historical heritage and environmental quality. Old buidlings, including the Wolf Tongue Mill, the Stone Garage, businesses, and residential units, have been documented and preserved. New buildings have been designed to complement the historic rural fabric of the area.

In 2010, Nederland Town government is functioning with a full, professional staff, volunteers and procedures to respond to the public. We cooperate and coordinate with contiguous counties, state and federal agencies and citizens and groups to provide consistent, continuous, environmentally responsible policies to manage growth and development.

In 2010, commerce is locally owned or operated with diverse small shops, cottage businesses, and clean industry located and run in such a manner as to protect the environment, the heritage and the residents of the area. Local businesses support local citizens as well as seasonal visitors. There are no fast food franchises or chains.

In 2010, the Greater Nederland Area is a more self-sufficient, community-centered place which has maintained its small town characteristics and pace of life, exhibiting diversity in its population and lifestyles. It is a compassionate community which provides a wide variety of services to its population including satellite county offices, an urgent care facility, affordable housing, an assisted living facility, and shelters for abused people.
