Old Timers/Miners Day
History and mission (as submitted by Jeannette Smith): Old Timers/Miners Days
has been an annual function for many years. The first Miners Day was celebrated
July 14, 1916 in Nederland. It died out when the Nederland area mines closed.
It was renewed in 1950. Then in 1962 a few mining events were added to the
Nederland Jamboree celebration. Miners Days became a separate celebration with
the help of Tom Hendricks. The Old Timers committee requested that the two
celebrations be combined. Now, Old Timers/Miners Days is celebrated on the last
weekend of July. We intend to continue this tradition as long as the town
exists. In this way the town of Nederland will never forget its roots in the
mining contribution to the state of Colorado, and the history of the Nederland
area. This weekend is for families and class reunions. It is a time to honor
our senior citizens of Nederland.
NANA'S Mission
The group then moved on to discussing NANA's mission statement. The draft of a
mission statement created at the first meeting stated:
NANA supports the missions of the local non-profits in order to
promote and enhance the quality of life of the greater Nederland area.
The group then worked with this draft and created NANA's mission statement:
NANA facilitates collaboration and communication among local
non-profits in order to empower these groups to accomplish their
missions to promote and enhance the quality of life of the greater
Nederland area.
Meeting Evaluation
The meeting ended with an evaluation of the meeting's facilitation. Remarks
and suggestions included: watching the timekeeper's time; making it a goal
to work for one hour meeting times; the prepared agenda was helpful; the
