Youth and Family Center
Wednesday, 7 March, 2001
1:00p - 2:30p
convened by Peak to Peak Healthy Communities Project
Meeting Objective
To convene area non-profits to explore possible ways of working together
AGENDA
1. Welcome and Introduction
2. Working Agreements
3. Introduction of participants
· who you are
· who you represent
· the mission of your organization
4. Create today's agenda
5. Next steps
6. Meeting evaluation
· what worked?
· what do we do differently next time?
Approximately twenty people attended this exploratory meeting co-facilitated by
Lisa McCarley and Garry Sanfacon of the Peak to Peak Healthy Communities
Project. After the welcome and introduction, the participants went around the
room introducing themselves and the organizations they represented.
Approximately thirteen area non-profits were represented at this meeting. These
included, in no particular order:
· Columbine Family Health Center
· Nederland Area Seniors
· High Country Community Greenhouse Project
· Teens, Inc.
· The Angie Foundation
· Peak to Peak Healthy Communities Project
· Boulder County Safehouse
· Wild Bear Center for Nature Discovery
· CASA Fund
· Nederland Artists Co-op
· Nederland Elementary PTSA
· Nederland Library
· Nederland Area Historical Society
· Nederland Area Chamber of Commerce
The group initially brainstormed about ideas and issues facing local
non-profits. These issues and topics included:
· Miners Day
· Collaborations of non-profit groups which would:
--enhance their unique missions
--share technical experience (e.g., grant writing expertise, etc.)
· Discussion groups focusing on issues facing non-profits
· Network of communication
· Electronic community calendar
· Volunteer database/connection
· Community foundation or a local United Way of Nederland
The group then decided to discuss Miner's Day. This issue was presented by
Kayla Evans, who invited those groups represented to actively participate in the
planning and events for Miners Day. She is seeking this participation in order
to revitalize Miners Day-to re-invigorate this local cultural and educational
family event. The group discussed group advertising, local group sponsorship of
booths and events, and coordination of these booths and activities. Those
present supported the notion that Miners Day be a community sponsored and
attended affair, while attracting visitors and their pocketbooks to this
community affair. The next Miners Day planning meeting was scheduled for the
following day, Thursday, 8 March, at 7:00p. All participants were invited to
this meeting, and the next planning meeting on Saturday, 17 March, at 10:00a.
The meeting discussion then focused on brainstorming about a local non-profit
alliance. NANPA was suggested as a possible name for this alliance: Nederland
Area Non-Profit Alliance. It was suggested that "non-profit" be defined for the
purposes of this alliance. The group agreed that churches, and those groups
registered as non-profit with the state of Colorado be included in this
definition. The group also agreed that a schedule of quarterly meetings would
work. These could be "eating meetings," with informal discussions and
educational speakers. The CASA website was offered as a way to communicate
meetings times, etc. for this alliance.
The group then decided that a mission statement was needed. The components of
the mission statement were to include:
1. Funding efforts/focus
2. Promoting/enhancing Nederland
3. Networking
4. Communication
5. Technical assistance/expertise
A preliminary draft of a mission statement for this non-profit alliance was
offered by Jill Dreves:
"NANPA supports the missions of the local non-profits in order to promote and
enhance the quality of life of the Greater Nederland Area community."
Those attending the next meeting of this non-profit alliance should bring their
mission statements for further exploration and discussion regarding the mission
of the alliance.
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 18 April, 2001, 12:00p - 2:00p, and
the Nederland Area Seniors will host the meeting. This will be an "eating
meeting," so RSVP at 303-258-0799 by Thursday, 12 April, 2001. PPHCP will
facilitate this meeting. Hosting and facilitation duties will then be the
responsibilities of a different group each meeting.
The agenda for the 18 April meeting includes:
1. Bringing written missions statements and programs of each group
2. Making goals for NANPA
The meeting evaluation included appreciation for the facilitation methods used
during this meeting. It was also suggested that all the area non-profit groups
be identified and represented at future meetings.
